April was characterized by strong, biting winds from
the East and by the fact that it only rained for a total of 10 hours for the
entire duration of the month. Seedlings struggled into growth and rows were patchy with
very poor germination. Frosts nipped the tops of the potatoes and parsnips were
particularly disappointing.
I had presumed that lack of rain was the reason why there
seemed to be no damage to crops whatsoever, but on clearing a plot to sow some
perennials, close inspection revealed that it was alive with slugs. I am now
presuming that the Slug Stoppa is acting most effectively in keeping slugs and
snails at bay. I have now surrounded the newly sown perennials and await with
interest to see what happens next.

There are signs of damage to the brassicas (which are, at
present, still
in a seed bed) but this appears to have been caused by pigeons rather than slugs or snails.
You will see that there is not an entry for beans or peas at the moment. This is
simply due to the fact that they have not been sown yet.
