JULY RESULTS

Top

July continued in the same vein as the previous month. Extremely hot, muggy days triggered thunderstorms and torrential rain. Slugs and snails continued to cross the Slug Stoppa  barriers with complete impunity and made short work of annuals and perennials. More importantly, they scythed down every trace of emerging vegetables and several rows of lettuces and spinach have had to be constantly re-sown. I have now taken to growing everything in the cold frames before planting out when they are big enough to fend from themselves. Night forays have again revealed huge quantities of slugs which have been dispatched with relish.

The Courgettes are now big enough to take care of themselves but the lettuces, peas, French beans and brassicas are resembling net curtains. The only saving grace has been the size of the onions and the fact that not one of them bolted as has happened in previous years.

The Slug Stoppa has, thus far, proved to be totally ineffective, nay, USELESS, as far as keeping slugs and snails away. I will continue the trial for the rest of the season but have now decided to back it up with good old fashioned beer traps and more regular overnight forays. I know this may well distort results but I may at least have a few vegetables left for the pot this way.
