The South-west corner of the building bears the brunt of the weather so this section of gable is strengthened by packing in extra layers of thatch. (L) The upright inclination of the ladder gives a clue here. The finished gable, (to the left of the ladder,) has to be joined to the straight run on the right hand side of the ladder before the two sections can be seamlessly butted together. (Where the ladder is at present) (C) The triangle formed by coming round the corner has to be painstakingly built up by using a wider bundle of straw at the bottom tapering to almost nothing at the top. (R) The final run can then be filled where the ladder was placed in the first picture. (L) Another bundle of straw is prepared. The simple act of banging the ends at an angle to the scaffold produces just the right chamfer to feather the eaves course. (C). (R) The overhang will be trimmed with shears in due course.
