November brought our first really hard frosts. Most of the
trees started to show good autumn colour and, as usual, we had a lot of rain.
There were still slugs and snails lurking in odd corners
throughout the garden, although most, had by now, gone into hibernation. I had a particularly fruitful
murdering session during renovations to a shrub bed, where I collected a
complete, level, bucket load of the things. On the vegetable garden things have
slowed down considerably. You can see damage was caused to the last surviving
lettuces, but this was again down to the Snailban being compromised by falling
leaves and the fact that caterpillars are still active,-despite the
attentions of a new robin. The situation was not helped by our cleaner zealously
pulling up a few leeks and throwing loose soil over the Snailban which aided and
abetted the odd snail and slug getting across for a meal.
I am sure the Snailban is still working well. In a normal, (pre-Snailban
year), there would not be a single lettuce standing, let alone,
almost intact. It will be interesting to see if there is any (slug and snail)
damage to other crops once the frosts or I have claimed the last lettuce.
As an update to the above, frosts did indeed claim the last
of the lettuces in the last week of the month. In the course of cleaning up the
plots and harvesting the last of the cauliflowers, I only found one slug over
all four plots and it would appear to be a logical time to conclude the
trials.
See the summary page for a complete appraisal of the
trials.
