OCTOBER RESULTS

Top

October carried on where September left off. Balmy days and no rain meant that slugs and snails were not very much in evidence. Towards the end of the month however, extremely high winds and torrential rain brought down more trees and slugs and snails out on the feed. Thankfully, they were not out in great numbers as it was also extremely cold, with frosts for the first time this season.

The last of the lettuces are just about hanging on but because of the cold there has not been too much damage. The courgettes have finished now and the spinach bolted in the heat so these have both been harvested as you can see. After initial predation, the salad rocket is doing really well as it has got older and although under attack from cabbage white caterpillars, is holding its own against slug damage.

I have sown a crop of spring greens and an over wintering pea (called "Meteor") but they have not come through yet. I am hoping that it will be too cold for slugs by the time they emerge. I also planted out six rows of baby cornflowers and scabious plants to put in the borders next year and thus far they seem to have escaped damage.
