SEPTEMBER RESULTS

Top

September gave us some really spooky weather. Nights had a definite autumnal feel and mornings were chilly and misty as one might expect. A heavy dew meant there were slugs on the prowl until mid morning and I was able to murder large numbers of them. There was a strange squall on the10th that only lasted for half an hour but blew down trees and frazzled the leaves of shrubs to a crisp. For the last two weeks we had very low light levels and warm cloudy days that threatened to drop heavy rain without it actually happening. September, in fact has been our driest month to date.

I re-sowed a number of crops this month but the misty conditions meant that there were many nights on which slugs could take full advantage. Lettuces at the two leaf stage were again destroyed completely and several of the remaining carrots have large holes down most of their length. On the plus side, Purslane was completely unaffected by slugs and I will be sowing more of this next season. There has been a slow down in damage to the brassicas and courgettes but I feel this is because they are now big enough or old enough to better withstand attack. Colder nights have also kept slug activity down.

Once again, Slug Stoppa has spectacularly failed to live up to expectation and provided no defence against slugs or snails whatsoever.
