Following the 2001 trial of the product "Snailban™"as
a means of controlling slugs and snails, I decided to conduct a similar
experiment for 2002 with a product that is more readily available in the U.K.
The product is called "Slug Stoppa".
It works on the same principle as Snail ban, in that it is a
physical barrier that contains a naturally occurring, desiccating, mineral which
forces slugs and snails to produce so much slime in order to cross it, that they
finally give up and leave plants unmolested.
Thanks to the experience gained from the Snail ban trial, I
have completely surrounded three of the plots in the vegetable garden with a
3" wide perimeter strip of Slug Stoppa. The unprotected plot contains potatoes.
For some reason, snails and slugs have never really been much of a problem
regarding spuds. I can only assume that I have previously been providing tastier
morsels elsewhere.
The trial started officially on the 1st of April 2002, and, as
per the Snailban trial, results were posted on a monthly basis on the last
day of the month or the nearest weekend to it.
